Social Media Policy for Entrepreneurs?

The popularity of social media continues to grow in Sweden. At the top is Facebook, where approximately 70% of all internet users in Sweden have an account (Read more: The Swedes and the Internet 2015). Everything we post, like, and share on social media is done personally and will be perceived by others as something that reflects our personality. However, the line between personal and business has begun to blur on social media, and as an entrepreneur, you are directly linked to your company. This means that as an entrepreneur, you must be extra careful to ensure that what you post, like, and share cannot harm your business.

Think before you post!

As an entrepreneur, it is important to think twice before taking action on social media. Who will be able to see what you post? How can it be perceived by others? How can it be misunderstood (e.g., in the case of inside jokes, jargon, and irony)?

It is becoming increasingly common for companies to establish a policy on how key individuals or employees should behave on social media to avoid harming the business. Much of it comes down to common sense and being a good online citizen. You can always start by reviewing the following:

  • Be respectful.
  • Consider the tone you use and avoid profanity.
  • Avoid discussing political and religious matters as much as possible.
  • Never post anything that could hurt or harm someone.
  • Avoid social media entirely when you are upset, very tired, or under the influence of medication or alcohol.
  • Always keep in mind: “Do I want my potential customers to see this?”
