Working from Home
In an increasingly digital world, opportunities for a more flexible work environment are emerging. Thanks to the internet, laptops, and mobile phones, many tasks can now be performed from the comfort of home. In addition to the extended freedom it offers for both employees and managers, there are also other positive effects of being able to work remotely.
Contrary to popular belief, studies have shown that those who work from home are just as effective as, and sometimes even more effective than, those who remain in the workplace. It has also been observed that sick leave has decreased and overall job satisfaction has increased among those offered the opportunity to work from home. Of course, there is always a downside, with the main negative effect of not being present in the workplace being a weaker sense of teamwork and a potential feeling of isolation. A recommendation is to offer the option to work from home but limit it to a few days a week to maintain contact and the natural communication that occurs in a workplace.
Whether working from home is voluntary or due to restrictions, it is important to create a sustainable and inspiring environment to be productive when “at work”. Here are some practical tips:
- Routine – Maintain somewhat similar routines to when you used to go to the office. It helps you feel like you are actually working and get started properly, even though you could stay in bed.
- Breaks – It is incredibly important not to forget to move. Take a walk around the house, see something different, and get some fresh air. It’s easy to get stuck in front of the computer. Walk around during phone meetings.
- Home Office – Create a designated space for work. It’s liberating to be able to work anywhere, but it’s good to have a place where your computer can reside and you know it’s “your workspace.”
- Communication – Stay in touch with your colleagues regularly. Whether it’s a chat group on Messenger or a Skype meeting over coffee, small talk is what makes the day and is only missed when it’s gone.
